    Back in my Grandmother's time, and even my mother practiced this, women had everyday dishes and then they had their prized pieces. These prized  pieces did not usually command a high dollar. Some were actually give-aways, but none the less these women set these dishes aside from their daily serveware,only to be  brought out on the special occassions.
